Itinerary
In the morning we depart by bus 100 km south east of the city of Cusco. The path passes through the north of Ausangate, and we leave the road a little west of the mountain. We camped in Tinki at 3,800m. After our lunch and when we begin to rest we see the sunlight falling on the northwest side of Ausangete.
Early in the morning we will walk to the Ausangate glacier. We have set up camp next to Upis hot springs, about 4 kilometers further away. We bathe in the hot springs and the cold Upismayo River, which runs next to our camp
Early we began to climb to a pass at 4,500, which separates the Ausangate, towards the east from the rock called Quellacocha. In the afternoon we passed Lake Pucacocha, at the summit pass and located between the various minor peaks. The sun plays on the colorful ice waterfalls, finally the camp.
We continue walking among the high altitude lakes in the valley immediately south of Ausangate, which are strangely blue-green. We got up to cross the Palomani pass at 4,800 meters above sea level. This is the highest point on the path passing between the massif and the spur, but rather a place to take advantage of a gentle slope at the top of the mountain. Here we can see Lake Sivinacocha to the east, the snow-capped peaks of Vilcanota, which is the cradle of this valley. We descend through the cold to the camp in Chilcapinaya.
We descend towards the sunny Pampa valley, which is inhabited by shepherds and their flocks of alpacas and sheep. We will have lunch at the bottom of the valley, we will pass Lake Ticllacocha, and then climb to a pass of 4,650 meters above sea level. The camp is located on the small lake Q'omercocha, or at sunset Pachaspata.
We drop into the valley and the town of Pacchanta and bathe in its hot springs throughout the afternoon.
We pass through increasingly inhabited valleys between the headwaters of the Paucartambo River on the north side of the mountain until sunset. We return to the road and our bus. We return to Cusco for happy hour and a night at the clubs, or a long rest, whatever you fancy.
