Itinerary
We embark early from Cusco, journeying along the road to Manu. Passing through numerous valleys, we witness small villages adorned with vibrant attire. Brief stops include Ninamarca, an archaeological site with pre-Inca tombs, and the charming colonial bridge in Paucartambo. As we ascend, enveloped in mist, we reach the Acjanaco Pass (3550 m / 11,647 ft), marking our entry into the Manu National Park. Descending into the lush tropical forest, our sights are set on encountering the iconic Cock-of-the-Rock and vibrant tangara.
An early start sees us descending through local plantations, offering picturesque views of the Alto Madre de Dios River. At Atalaya, our gateway to the Reserved Zone, we board a covered motorboat, navigating the winding river towards the Manu National Park. Amidst sightings of avian life and potential glimpses of the elusive jaguar, we arrive at Romero Lodge, nestled amidst the heart of the park.
Today, we delve deeper into the Manu Reserve, beginning with an exploration of Lake Salvador. Home to giant otters and a myriad of bird species, including the peculiar Hoatzin and majestic macaws, we traverse the tranquil waters in search of wildlife encounters. Amidst lush forest trails, sightings of capuchin monkeys and pygmy marmosets await. A serene night awaits back at the lodge.
Embarking on the Manu River, we journey towards the Madre de Dios River. En route, we pause at a tower overlooking a pristine oxbow lake, offering unparalleled vistas of the surrounding virgin forest. Continuing our boat journey, we remain vigilant for avian and reptilian sightings, with hopes of encountering the elusive jaguar. Nightfall finds us at El Dorado Lodge, amidst the tranquility of the rainforest.
Navigating the Madre de Dios River, we bid farewell to the Manu area, observing diverse wildlife along the way. Our journey upstream brings us to the Guadalupe Nature Reserve, where an evening stroll offers further nature encounters.
